Community Asset Transfer

What is a Community Asset Transfer?

‘Community asset transfer’ means the transfer of land or buildings from organisations (such as local authorities) to community groups (sports clubs, trusts, libraries and so on).

Sometimes, the transfer may be at a discounted price if there is a benefit to the local community. Discount or not, it can present an opportunity for a community to take on a facility that might otherwise be forced to shut down because local authorities are finding it increasingly difficult to subsidise them.

Should Our Club Consider a Community Asset Transfer?

Community asset transfers are not a decision to be taken lightly. Fortunately, the Welsh Government has stepped in with an online toolkit with practical support, guidance and further links to organisations that can help.

Other organisations that can help you decide include Fields In Trust and Good Practice Wales who have produced a best practice guide to Community Asset Transfers in Wales.

Lastly, you may wish to take a look at a Community Asset Transfer toolkit created by Reach Rural Development, an organisation that aims to improve the lives of people living in the rural wards of Bridgend County Borough. The toolkit is a step-by-step guide for Community Asset Transfer in Bridgend.
